(Trans)places to Play: Mapping Cultures of Reinvention in the Age of Digitally Mediated Translocal Relationships

This thesis undertook five studies investigating how families and romantic partners living far apart use digital technologies to resituate a sense of togetherness and shared place at a distance. I offer a new word, “transplace,” to characterise the kinds of places being cultivated together by loved ones living far apart, often through the internet, telephones, physical mail, and other networked technologies.
