Under Moonlight

Just a little after-exam celebratory fanfic. Number 73, and one of my better poems, considering the time I took (about 15 minutes again). Inspired by "Clair de Lune (Moonlight)" by Debussy, one of the most beautiful piano pieces ever. About Cresselia (spelling?), my favourite 4th Generation Pokemon.

Under Moonlight

Glimmering over the waves of sleep

Over the shimmering surface of dreams

On your closed eyelids

On the restful world

-

The moonlight.

-

I see…see each living soul as he or she falls

Through the spangled whirls and tangles of

Starry, cloudy, windy nights

Into the world on the other side of imagination

-

I see children grasping their soft toys tightly for comfort

As they come closer to sleep's arms

Their holds staying tight as they try to pass the boundary

Frowns playing on their brows

-

I see teenagers restless with anger,

Hatred, fear, insecurity

Pulling their pillows over their heads,

Pacing around their bedrooms, sleep unreachable

-

I see men lying on mattresses hard as stone (to them)

Eyes wide with panic at the workloads that await them

Weighing on their backs even though they are light as air

As insubstantial as a feather's brush

-

I see old women crazed with age, their cries of madness

Waking her neighbours, but uncontrollable

Something that time has inflicted her with

And never allowed her to cast away ever since

-

And I bless them with my gift. I drift magic through their windows

And it cascades over their bed sheets like liquid, like tears

But even lighter, softer, sweeter to human eyes

To give them the thing they need the most at the moment

-

The toddler smiles, his nightmare vanishing.

The teen sighs; the creases leaving her face.

The office worker turns to the window and takes in a deep breath.

The grandmother whispers a last word and closes her eyes.

-

Then the peace whispers on through the trees

The lake stills and holds true my portrait

The rays glance off the wavering surface, towards the world

All bathed in moonlight.

All serene, all free of worry, for these few hours of the day.
